How JPEG Quality Levels Trade Size Against Detail
JPEG shrinks files by discarding fine detail in ways the eye barely registers — smooth gradients survive almost untouched, while high-frequency texture is thinned first. Quality 80–90 is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos; 60–75 shows minor softening on close inspection; below 50, blocky artifacts appear around edges, text and hair. Two practical rules follow. First, always compress from the original file, never a re-saved copy — generation loss compounds with every encode. Second, images containing text or thin lines (documents, signatures, screenshots) degrade fastest, so give them the highest quality your KB budget allows, or keep them as PNG if no size limit forces JPEG.
JPEG Still Too Big? Resize the Dimensions First
Quality reduction has a floor: a 6000-pixel-wide camera photo cannot reach 50 KB at any acceptable quality because there are simply too many pixels to encode. The fix is reducing dimensions before compressing — a photo destined for a portal upload field or an email rarely needs more than 1200–1600 pixels on its longest side, and halving dimensions cuts pixel count to a quarter.
